ON THE ISSUE OF USING THE TERM “ÈPISTAT” BY POLYBIUS

Background. The study of the ancient history is impossible without a clear understanding of the terminology of the source, characteristics of different terms. The aim of the work is to analyze the use of the term “èpistat” by Polybius.
Materials and methods. Realization of the research objectives was achieved through the usage of the work by the Achaean historian Polybius. The methodological potential includes the comparative historical method that enables to compare the image of the leaders of Hellenistic cities.
Results. In Polybius` books many officials often have vague designation, and to denote the leaders of cities the Achaean historian often chooses a different term. But sometimes the historian prefers the term “èpistat”. For example, after 224 BC the Makedonian king Antigonus appointed the Boeotian Brachylles, the son of Neon, as an epistat in Sparta.
Conclusions. The author believes Polybius used the term “èpistat” when he saw the official documents.
